Is your child beginning to read? Want to help them begin but unsure how to? Learning about, and practicing, sight words are great ways to make your child more comfortable with phonics and reading. This will help them develop a strong foundation for the rest of their academic lives! Essentially, sight words are common words that your child will encounter when learning how to read.
These types of words usually fall into two categories; frequently used and non-phonetic. Frequently used words are fairly short words such as be, it, could, again, then, was, as well as many more. These words are what hold sentences together and act as the “glue” when forming thoughts and phrases. Non-phonetic words can be more complicated to learn because they have unusual spelling and pronunciation. Even though these types of words are more challenging for young learners, they’re crucial to become familiar with.
Two simple and effective ways to help your child learn about sight words are to read to them and create sight word flashcards! Repetition is key when encountering a new concept so try making flashcards with age-appropriate sight words and run through them with your little ones. Make note of which ones they struggle with and dedicate some extra time to reinforcing those. In addition, pick out some of your child’s favorite books (and maybe a few new ones with more advanced vocabulary) and take turns reading to them and having them read to you. Learning about phonics and reading in general often takes time, so make sure to remain patient and offer lots of encouragement and positive feedback at any progress your child makes, no matter how small.
We offer various live classes to not only help your child learn to read, but develop a love for learning and language along the way! One way that we do this is by helping students spell out and recognize sight words by teaching them consonant blends. Once a child begins to grow more comfortable with certain sight words and sounds, it will further encourage them to conquer new, unfamiliar words and propel them to success!
